SURAJ KUND

This is a 107 x 55m tank whose waters are reputed to be the reason for the origin of Gwalior. In the 5th century AD, when the sage Gwalipa cured Suraj Sen of leprosy, it is said that he used the scared waters of this pond.

The other palaces in the fort are the Vikramaditya Palace, Karan Palace, Jehangir Mahal and Shah Jahan Mahal. There is the Chatarbhuj Mandir or Temple of the Four-armed, dedicated to a nobleman who was killed in 1518. There are also various Tals (lakes) like the Jatira Tal, Rani Tal, Ek-Khamb Tal (one pillar lake) and Chedi Tal.

Gurudwara Data Bandhi Chhod

Built in the memory of Guru Hargobind Saheb , the 6th Sikh Guru who was imprisoned here by Emperor Jehangir for over two years. It is located on the Gwalior Fort.

 Tansen’s Tomb: Tansen needs no introduction to followers of Indian classical music. This great musician and one of the nine jewels or ‘Nav Ratans’ of Akbar’sCourt, Tansen lies buried in Gwalior. The memorial has a pristine simplicity and is built in the early Mughal architectural style. More than a monument, the tomb is a part of Gwalior’s cultural heritage: it is the venue of a music festival on a national scale held annually in November-December, to which flock the lovers of classical music.
