The Victoria Memorial
The
Victoria
Memorial was built at a time when the British Raj was at its
culminating point and hence it is no wonder that it represents the
architectural climax of the city. It was Viceroy Lord Curzon who
specified its classical style but the actual plan was laid down by
the renowned architect Sir William Emerson. Its architectural
details had a strong influence of the English civic baroque
architecture of the period, particularly the Belfast City Hall.
This grandiloquent structure presently houses a museum of British
India memorabilia. In the evening, special Son et Lumière shows on
the historical themes are held in the park. Every day, crowds of
people visit the premises from early morning to sunset. Being one of
the most popular tourist spot in the city, it is one of the few
well-maintained heritage buildings that exist in the city today.
