Darrah Wildlife Sanctuary, Kota
Darrah,
once
the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Kota-and the
place where many of the splendid hunt scenes in the Kota
miniature paintings were set-is situated 35 miles south of
Kota. Spread over and area of 106 square miles, those
forests were once thick with everything from tigers to
rhinoceros .Today neither the wildlife nor the forests
themselves are as rich as they used to be, but Darrah is
still worth visiting. You can view animals such as the
Leopard, the bear, chinkara, and wolf, from the old hunting
boxes of the Maharajas.
The word darrah literally; means a "pass" and these forests were once a place of great strategic importance, opening up the hills of Hadauti to the plains of Malwa in the east .They were also the scene of several battles between the Rajputs, the Marathas and, later the British .Another very pretty, and almost totally undiscovered, little sanctuary 30 miles south-east of Kota is Sorsan. It is a naturalist's paradise, with its rich species of birdlife, and reputedly the best palace in India to view the endangered great Indian bustard
