Nainital |
Set around Naini
Lake, at an altitude of 1938 m in the Central Himalayas of the Kumaon region
lies picturesque Nainital.It was discovered by P. Barrow, a sugar merchant from
Saharanpur in 1841. He was so moved by the scenic splendour of the place & the
lake that he had his boat carried up there & this hill station became the
fashionable focus of the elite. In due course it becamethe summer capital of
then United Province dotted with lakes, Nainital has earned the epither of '
Lake District ' of India.Naini Lake. Legend of Shiva & Sati associates this
place as where Sati eyes (Naina) fell &i. Hence named after the Goddess Naini.
Nainital is a glittering jewel in the Himalyan necklace, blessed with scenic
natural spledour and varied natural resources . Dotted with lakes , Nainital has
earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India . The most prominent of the
lakes is Naini lake ringed by hills . Nainital has a varied topography . Some of
the important places in the district are Nainital , Haldwani , Kaladhungi ,
Ramnagar , Bhowali , Ramgarh , Mukteshwar , Bhimtal , Sattal and Naukuchiatal .
Nainital’s unending expense of scenic beauty is nothing short of a romance
with awe-inspiring and pristine Mother nature.
Its snow capped peaks, verdant valleys, rolling meadows, abundance of flora &
fauna, crystal lakes have beckoned lovers of nature since ages.
Due to the HMT watch factory on its outskirts, the place is famous as the
Crystal City. In the foothills is the world fame Corbett National Park. Ranikhet
is there encircled by snow peaks. A beauteous landscape of Kausani attracts the
tourist. The historical sites & sanctified spots of the region are so which very
few hill stations can equal.
The main road The Mall lies between the lakes, Tallital at its south and lake's
head Maliital to the northwest.
How to Reach There :
Air :
Nearest airport is at Pantnagar (Dist. Udam Singh Nagar), 71km. At the time of
writing flights are not operational.
Rail :
Connected by broadgauge with Delhi & Kolkatta, Kathgodam is the nearest railhead
35km away. From Lalkaun(60km), trains are available for Agra & Lucknow.
Resevation can be made at Nainital from Reservation Office, Tallital. A special
Shatabdi Express operates from Delhi to Kathgodam every Friday & Sunday in
summer from April to July.
Road :
Nainital is connected by good roads to all the major National & State Highways.
There is a regular half an hour service to Kathgodam. The deluxe & ordinary
services connect Delhi at regular intervals.
