Delhi,
the capital of India, is really two diametrically opposite cities that
have come together in one eclectic amalgam. On the one hand is the Old

Delhi built by the British; replete with broad avenues, stately homes
and landscaped gardens.

40-odd tigers that roam free in Ranthambhor. Today, Ranthambore is

Singh-II, Jaipur is laid out as described in the ancient Hindu treatise
on architecture “Shilpa-Shastra.” Battlement walls with seven gates
encircle the old city; broad avenues divide it into neat rectangles.
Jaipur is popularly known as the Pink City, for the pink-colored
sandstone of old walled city’s buildings. In 1897, Mark Twain extolled
Jaipur’s “architectural quaintness,” which gives the impression of “an
unreality, a picture, a scene in a theater.”
Day 05: Jaipur
In the morning, drive to Amber Fort, situated 11 kms. from Jaipur on
Jaipur-Delhi highway. Visit the fort on elephant back. The palace of the
local rulers, known as the Amber fort, was built in the 17th century on
a hilltop overlooking a lake. The towers and the domes of the Amber
Palace are reminiscent of scenes from some fairy tales. Its walls of
victory are richly decorated with panels of alabaster with fine tendered
hues, together with every kind of workmanship for which Jaipur is known.
In the afternoon depart for a city tour. The pink city was founded in
the early 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the celebrated ruler,
statesman and astronomer. Jaipur is a walled city with seven gates.
Spacious market squares at all cross roads are replete with goods of
diverse kinds. This city is made of local red sandstone. Important
sights to visit are- Hawa Mahal known as the Palace of Winds. Its
delicate honey-comb design glows in the evening light like some
fantastic nuptial cake. Maharaja Jai Singh's observatory, Jantar-Mantar
is the most famous of the five observatories he built in different
cities. Located in the spacious Ram Niwas Garden is the Central Museum
containing vast collection of metal ware, ivory carvings, jewelry,

stretch out on all sides. Upon a rocky eminence stands a massive
impregnable fortress, within which lies a number of palaces, barracks,
temples and other buildings, delicately latticed windows and pierced
monuments worked in sandstone are a dominant motif within the rugged
fort. On the walls of one of the gates of entry are the palms of widows
who, ages ago, immolated themselves upon the pyres of their departed
husbands.
Afternoon drive (3 hrs) to Jamba - In the middle of the mighty Thar
Desert, on top of a 150 ft sand dune, an oasis of life, close to the

has been given a strong 'heritage feel' in its decoration, using old
entrance doors. At the extreme end of the camp is a sundeck with a sheer
drop at one end. Majestic views of the Thar Desert and the tiny village
of Jamba meet the eye. Sunrise and sunset from this point are truly
divine. Jeep safari and sand-dune bashing through the desert. One comes

see these colorful people at their various skills. In some of the Dhanis,
we will see them weaving shawls, in other places we would see them
making a carpet and in other places stitching their traditional “Jootis”
(sandals). As countryside flows beyond the window-panes of our jeeps, we
